As good as it is, Guardian® is not a silver bullet. Scours is a management issue, and good scours control means good cow/calf management:
- Provide clean, dry calving areas. Do not give scours-causing organisms the chance to build up.
- Minimize stress at birth and during the newborn period. Keep calves dry and clean.
- Be certain that calves receive adequate amounts of colostrum within the first 12-24 hours of life. The disease-fighting antibodies in colostrum can only be absorbed at that time. (Four quarts is a standard dairy recommendation. Beef colostrum is more concentrated and variable; the quantity rarely is measured, and it is impractical to evaluate.)
Management practices may be difficult to change, for many reasons. Implementing a scours prevention program with Guardian can be simple, quick, and effective.
